Engine Cut-Off Device types and usage

As of April 1, 2021, federal law requires the use of an Engine Cut-Off Switch (ECOS) on boats less than 26 feet with 3 or more horsepower when operating on plane or above displacement speed. This law applies to all U.S. waters.

An ECOS is a safety device that stops the engine if the operator is displaced from the helm. This prevents 'circle of death' accidents where a boat continues in tight circles, potentially striking the ejected operator or others.
