Five steps from “never boated” to legal on the water: who needs the card, what the course covers, how the exam works, and how the lifetime FWC card is issued.
If you were born on or after January 1, 1988 and want to operate a vessel of 10 horsepower or more in Florida, you must carry a Boating Safety Education ID Card (plus photo ID). Every rental jet ski and nearly every rental boat crosses the 10 HP line.
1
Born on or after January 1, 1988 and operating 10 HP or more? You need it. Born earlier? You are exempt for boats — but the course is still the fastest way to learn Florida’s rules.
2
Florida requires a course covering the state’s boating-education standards: terminology, equipment, navigation rules, emergencies, and Florida law. Ours is fully online and self-paced, built to the NASBLA and FWC education standards.
3
80% to pass, unlimited retakes. Every question comes with an explanation, so a failed attempt is a study session, not a dead end.
4
You get a printable certificate of completion immediately after passing. Keep proof of education plus photo ID with you whenever you operate.
5
The official Boating Safety Education ID Card is issued by the FWC for state-approved courses and never expires. See our lookup guide for how cards are verified and replaced.
