Propeller safety zones and practices

Propeller strikes are among the most severe types of boating injuries. A spinning propeller can cause devastating injuries or death in a fraction of a second. At 3,000 RPM, a typical 3-blade propeller makes 150 strikes per second.

The danger zone extends in all directions around the propeller but is especially dangerous behind the boat. Even at idle speed, a propeller can cause serious injury. The propeller danger zone exists whenever the engine is running.
